Dr. Lloyd D. Heron, DVM
Lloyd grew up in small town Alabama during the 50’s & 60’where his all-star high school football status landed him a college scholarship at Samford University in Birmingham, AL – 1969. He graduated from Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1974 and earned a spot in the International Pre-Medical Honor Society of Alpha Epsilon Delta and International Veterinary Medicine Honor Society.
Following graduation from AU-CVM , Lloyd moved to Wake County, NC to join the Veterinary staff at Apex Veterinary Hospital owned by Dr. Ben. Harrington. In 1980 after leaving Apex, he established his own practice in Durham County which later became know as Quail Roost Large Animal Veterinary Service. In 1996 with the acquisition of the current property in Rougemont NC, Lloyd founded and incorporated Flat River Veterinary Hospital, an equine hospital facility.
Lloyd has been practicing veterinary medicine for 35 years with a special interest in surgery, lameness, and trauma cases. Horses have been a big part of Lloyd’s private life as well. Over the years he has enjoyed fox-hunting, eventing, polo, and most recently roping. He also enjoys woodworking, gardening and being a Dad.

During her High School years Tammi completed a 2 yr. program for the Care and Training of Standardbred Horses @ BOCES in Goshen, NY. She worked a while at at both Goshen Historic Track and Monticello Raceway before joining the U.S. Army in 1984 where she earned the rank of Sgt. before completing her commitment in 1988. Tammi moved to NC in 1988 to work for Tara Farm, a Morgan Horse Breeding and Show Stable in Raleigh, where she worked as a caretaker and later assistant trainer until 1997 when she joined the staff at Flat River Veterinary Hospital.
Tammi enjoys cruising with her husband on their Honda motorcycles, gardening, & Rock & Roll. Go Steelers!
Growing up in small town upstate New York, Cindy began her career with horses at age 6. In 1970 she moved to Raleigh, NC and became the Manager/Trainer at Tara Farm, where she lead the farm to national status as a breeding and show stable of World Champion Morgan horses. After retiring from the horse business in 1996 she joined Dr. Lloyd Heron and helped establish Flat River Veterinary Hospital in Rougemont, NC.
Cindy now resides in NC’s Blue Ridge Mountains – where she has studied and earned a degree in another lifelong interest, Horticulture – and continues as acting Business Manager for Flat River. Cindy is an avid reader and enjoys astronomy, horticulture, being a grandmother, and her newest passion –fly-fishing with her son.
